Othering: viewing or defining someone as fundamentally different than oneself. Othering is wrong when it’s based on race, group affiliation, political party, class, country of origin, and other human traits. That’s because we’re all humans with the same basic needs and human nature. We aren’t that different from each other like we are fundamentally different from a dog or a fish .
But the Bible makes a clear distinction between two types of people, those who are children of God and those who are not. So it’s not completely wrong to talk about us and them when discussing certain topics. However, all of us are sinners in need of a savior. Some have been forgiven and changed from death to life. Others are still dead in their sin. And we do not know if an unsaved person will be saved in the future. So we must be careful that WE act like children of God and live righteous lives and leave the sorting out to God.
1 John 3:7: By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
John 8: 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires.
In the following parables, Jesus clearly states in multiple examples that people will sorted according to whether they are evil or righteous. But how does one become righteous enough to be counted as God’s child? By repenting and believing in Jesus for forgiveness of sins and salvation, we will be born again. Then after being forgiven, we should trust and obey Jesus by studying the Bible and praying and living a holy life. We are saved by God’s grace, through faith, not works. This means that we are saved by our faith in Jesus, not anything that we do.
Matthew 13:23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it.
Matthew 13: 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.
Matthew 13:49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace.
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Christians should not condemn unbelievers. That is not our job. But, praise God, we are definitely different from them. We should pray that they will be saved from sin and judgment as well.
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
