Long ago, before personal computers were invented, which was about 50 years ago in the 1970s, most people had some type of belief in God. Not everyone believed the same thing about God, and there were a few who claimed not to believe in any god, but in general most people in America would answer “yes” if you asked if there was a sort of generic god or the Judeo- Christian God. And in other countries, most people believed in whatever god they were exposed to by their parents, such as Buddha, Allah, or Hindu gods. Just to clarify, in this article we are discussing the God of the Christian Bible.

⁶ But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6 NKJV

Several cultural changes in the past 150 years began to erode the public’s confidence in God’s existence. Probably most important was industrialism, including the movement of people from rural areas to cities to work in factories, and then the theory of Darwinism was taught in public schools which claimed that man evolved from apes instead of being created by God, and then increasing college enrollment which exposed young impressionable minds to atheists and philosophers. The common thread in all of these is that people were introduced to other ideas in their daily lives, such as at work and school, namely the idea that God does not exist. These ideas were contagious, like a virus.

God exists whether or not your teacher or parents or friends believe in Him.

Little children, unless they have been expressly told not to, almost always have a natural belief in God. In today’s world, many of them do pick up that they should NOT believe in God from influential adults or other kids. Some of them are being programmed to worship the earth instead of God, for example. Others have never heard the word God mentioned in their families, but they still believe that there is something out there. Sadly, some children only hear God’s name used as a curse word or the ever popular OMG! saying. But since the majority of Americans do believe in God, and there are churches and Vacation Bible Schools and Christian teachers in public schools, most children do get exposed eventually to the idea and have no problem believing that there is an invisible being who is very powerful and that people pray to, and they accept it as real.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Little children have not had time to develop a resistance to belief in God.

But if you are reading this article, you probably are not a little child. You probably have had enough life experiences, good and bad, and enough relationships, loving and otherwise, and heard, watched and read enough people questioning everything about life, that you are not so sure what is real anymore. Maybe you have heard someone say that nothing exists, nothing matters, we are just going to die and there’s nothing after death. Maybe your life is not a happy one. Maybe you look around and see so many bad things happening that you think surely a loving God would not let the world be like this. Let’s see what happened.

God made a perfect world and man broke it with sin.

Have you ever been out in nature, like in the woods or at a park and looked at the amazing tall trees, singing birds, and colorful flowers that no one planted ? Or maybe you went to a lake or pond with fish, dragonflies, frogs and other creatures? Or to the beach where you saw the waves being made with no wave machine, and sand that no one put there. The beautiful blue sky and bright sun in the daytime and the moon and stars in the sky at night. God made all of that in the beginning, and it was very good. Then he made a man and a woman and they were perfect. And he blessed them. But then they disobeyed him in a very serious way and it brought death and decay into the perfect world. This is why you see bad things happening in a beautiful world and people hurting each other when they should be loving like God.

²⁷ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

The existence of this beautiful world is the proof of God’s existence.

Some simple questions for you to ponder. Do you really think it is possible for the amazing human body to have evolved from slime? Do you really think it is possible for a complex cell, then multi-cellular organisms, and then the entire world to form from a random explosion in space? Have you ever really thought about the ridiculous idea that simple things magically become more complex? It doesn’t matter how long scientists claim it would take, it would NEVER happen. When things breakdown, they stay broken. When living things are simple, unless they have a DNA code telling them how to develop, they stay simple. DNA is like a computer program. Computer programs are written by a programmer. DNA did not make itself. God made DNA and everything else that exists. The proof of God is what you see around you. But God didn’t have to write a code for it. He simply spoke and it came into being. Science is simply God’s handiwork being discovered.

God’s existence is proven by our need for Him.

Humans are always searching for something beyond simple survival. It may be love, fulfillment, power, approval, enlightenment, entertainment, thrills, relationships, or whatever, but really it is a search for God. Some people know that is what they are seeking, other don’t and they go off in all the wrong directions. The people who claim to be atheists have replaced God with some other god of their own making, often that is themselves, another person, money ,or addictions. But all of us have a soul that longs for connection with our creator. Personalities differ and spiritual expression will not be the same for everyone, but in the right moment, such as in a fearful or painful or happy situation, our soul can experience literal pain from our feelings. These are not just emotions in the brain, this is deeper inside us. This is the place that is most vulnerable to being deeply wounded by betrayal, lies, loss, or guilt, what we usually call our heart. And also the place that experiences the most intense love and joy. These feelings were created for us by God. If we were simply evolved from slime, we would not have feelings. Feelings often lead us into doing things that are NOT in our best interest, the opposite of what Darwin called”the survival of the fittest”. Humans do things like risk their lives to save another person’s life. We do everything for our children and maintain lifelong relationships with them even when it hurts, unlike animals. We forgive, we love, we reconcile, we compromise, we share, we sympathize. Just like Jesus.

How can I get to know God better?

I really hope you are asking that question right now! God knows all about you and when you get to know Him, you will be able to love and trust Him with your life, present and eternal. The best way is to read the Bible! You can read it online. But first, you have to believe that God is real. Do you? If you do, say a prayer right now and tell God you want to know Him!
