A New Frontier: AI and Data Centers

A new frontier

Howdy friends! Tax season has ended and I’m returning to normal life again, at least somewhat. I’m currently studying every day for my next big step: opening my own tax office with a focus on tax resolution services. So I still have taxes on the brain.

But I have enough free time now to read the news and Facebook and I see frequent posts and articles from angry people, both locally and statewide and from other states, complaining about the mushrooming of data centers in pastures all over rural areas and close to small towns. It’s happening in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to name a few, and in my state, Texas. There are town meetings and hearings happening all over the country that seem to have very little effect on the growth of this industry.

Just a fraction of the Facebook groups devoted to this topic

Why is it impossible to fight ? Well, my fellow Trump voters, it’s because building AI infrastructure is one of Trump’s main goals for his presidency. He was a promoter in his first term and that enthusiasm only increased in 2025. He claims that the race to beat the world in AI is a matter of national security and an economic imperative. In other words, if we don’t do it, we’ll fall behind the rest of the world, and we can’t have that .

Read it here . https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Americas-AI-Action-Plan.pdf

The main purpose of AI has always been for defense, which includes total surveillance and financial security systems. It was never about making funny memes and using it as a search engine or counselor. Of course AI will also be used to fill in for humans as the population shrinks. Who needs people when you can have cool robots! But for now I think the most urgent use is a way to prop up a dying US economy, along with forever wars.

My point is that this is what we voted for , but many of us didn’t realize that to make America great again we’d have to pay such a high price. I feel bad for the people whose homes will lose all their value because of data centers being built next door . I feel bad for those who suffer from the noise and other health problems they cause. I feel bad for all of us who will pay higher taxes and electricity costs. I also fear that water shortages are coming for some.

But there’s nothing we can do about it in most cases , at least in Texas, because rural counties don’t have the legal authority to block them. Even more, Trump has made it impossible to block them, claiming that it’s “climate activists” who are opposed to data centers and AI. In truth, many of the people being affected in Texas are republicans.

But I have noticed that not many are willing to say what I’m saying here. Face it, we rural Texans got screwed by our own governor , senator and the Republican Party . My own county has a data center being built despite opposition. And several others not far away, despite the fact that Texas has a water shortage. We can only hope one day that AI will be used to solve the problems they create and improve our lives.

Not only are Texas politicians supporting and funding the AI development with tax abatements, they’re trampling property rights. And yet, it’s not really fair to say that Trump caused this. He’s just going along with the real power: tech billionaires. This plan was in motion way before he was elected. And it’s probably true that we can’t stop it because we do have to be first to stay in control of the world.

But that doesn’t mean we should pretend we didn’t get screwed. Or that the future won’t become a dystopian technocratic nightmare . We did and it will. But look how happy everyone is! Aren’t you excited?!
