The Biscuit Years

My husband made biscuits from scratch today using only two ingredients, self-rising flour and heavy cream, about a 2:1.5 ratio. Bake 10-14 minutes at 450 degrees. Very easy! Just don’t overwork the dough.

Things are looking up! I’m finally getting some help with the cooking. My husband is great at barbecuing but since we got married 33 years ago I have been the one in the kitchen making three meals a day. But he has recently taken an interest in watching cooking videos, which the algorithm is reinforcing, and he saw a guy make these biscuits and wanted to try the recipe.

I was happy to encourage this new interest. I bought the ingredients and showed him how to turn on the oven and find the baking pan. He mixed up the dough and then rolled it out and cut the biscuits with a glass .

My husband is a nervous Nelly when he cooks anything. It’s hilarious! He’s so anxious about it turning out well. You’d think he was in a life or death situation. “If the biscuits are bad, you die!” He just really wants everyone to to like it. I told him not to worry, we will eat it no matter what.

So the biscuits were done and we put butter on them and jelly on some and sausage on some . It was extra delicious since I didn’t have to do all the work! You’d think he just won a baking contest, he was so happy!

This was more than cooking for us, it was a fun activity. We don’t get out much anymore. I guess baking biscuits for entertainment isn’t such a bad thing. So I’m looking forward to eating more of his yummy kitchen offerings as we enter our 60s and spend more time hanging around the house.

We aren’t true empty nesters since we still have two adult children at home, but since we have no grandchildren, we are not sure what to do with our extra time. We’ve been working in the yard some and he is always doing projects . I take walks and watch too much TV, among other things.

How do you spend your down time with your spouse when the kids are grown ? Do you like cooking together ? Who does most of the cooking?

  1. My wife does almost all the cooking. I’ve tried to help her out with it, but she always ends up booting me out of the kitchen. The kitchen is her domain. She doesn’t want anyone messing with it. She even insists on doing the dishes. I’ve learned to accept this and not complain, since I handle so many other things around here.
