Freedom From the Cult of Self

Today’s cult of self has elevated the right to BE and DO anything you want to it’s highest level ever thanks to modern technology, science and medicine. No limits! And the current events of war, inflation, disease, crime, and family breakdown are directly related to this world view. The truth is that you can be and do many things in this world, but you cannot save yourself from the final judgment that ALL PEOPLE will face after death.

Of course not everyone is like that, especially my readers. For now we still have some law and order in the world and God is still raising up righteous men and women to fight this increasing lawlessness. Our job is to share the good news with the deceived and doomed. The battle is against those who teach that there are no rules, only barriers to their desires.

History is not just repeating itself, the evil is amplified due to the power of technology. When I see that sexual perversion is portrayed as normal in children’s programs and on TV commercials, and monogamous marriage and having children are portrayed negatively, it reminds me of the days where men demanded that they be allowed to have their way with visitors to their city called Sodom. When I see the hatred of cancel culture and violent riots justified in the media, I think of when angry mobs stoned the disciples for pointing out their sin or when a crowd could choose to set a murderer free and crucify an innocent man.

These things happened in a world that claimed to worship gods and God. They made sacrifices, sometimes human, and they had their idols, but they didn’t love their gods. Their self-made religion was worthless and harmful and served their pride and their selfish desires. Their ‘gods’ allowed sexual perversion and human sacrifice, it was even part of their ‘worship’.

The culture is once again elevating pride and self above everything else as it becomes more and more pagan and atheistic. The result is the collapse of the order that the Christian church brought to the world when it was obedient to Christ. We see it happening in the economy, the family, communities, churches, and our own minds. And next will be violence and persecution of those who try to stop the cult of self.

Shortly after the resurrection of Jesus, the early church enjoyed a short period of great success. But it wasn’t long until they were being persecuted and fed to the lions. God’s people will never be accepted by the world system because we tell them the truth, that they are sinners in need of redemption.

Jesus came to save us from ourselves and our slavery to our fleshly desires and from the temptations of the world and the devil. The purpose of the church is to teach the good news that Jesus paid for our sins and offers forgiveness to those who will repent and believe on him. He came to set us free from serving ourselves! We are FREE TO FOLLOW HIM. He offers freedom from anxiety, depression, and the inevitably disappointing results of trying to be our own god. There is no freedom without Jesus. Nothing in this world will satisfy!

The church is still alive, but it needs to return to the pure gospel. If the church will humble ourselves and return to God in faith and obedience and begin speaking truth again, some will repent and be saved. Don’t let fear of persecution stop you! Save the perishing. Jesus said, love not the world or the things of the world. Follow Jesus and be saved from the wrath to come.
