If I tell you that we are going on vacation and it’s gonna be super fun and you won’t have to do anything because it’s a full service resort where all your needs are met and the weather is always sunny, I will have created some pretty high expectation in your mind. If we talk about how great it’s gonna be for months and then we get there and there’s a hurricane and all the staff are staying home and you have to figure out to survive until you can get a plane back HOME, you are going to be unhappy. You’re going to be disappointed, angry, feel like a victim of something and someone, and want a refund. For a good example of this, see the classic movie Club Paradise, one of my favorites.
If you think about what the secular humanists have been saying for years, it’s the same thing. WE can make this world a paradise! But somehow things are still ‘bad’ much of the time for most people. They are ‘bad’ compared to the IDEALS of secular humanists. But they are really just ‘normal life’.
But when you believe the myth that LIFE SHOULD BE A CERTAIN WAY, with no racism, no poverty, no disease, no pain, no injustice, no war, no death, no inequality, you will always be traumatized because that is not how life is! Every day something will happen that will trigger you. We call it critical theory now, but the roots are secular humanism.
Why are so many people taking anti-depressants and changing their sex and rioting and killing and hating? Because they feel cheated and let down all the time. WHERE IS MY ALL INCLUSIVE VACATION? And this is in the wealthiest nation in the world with the best healthcare and most social programs and every available resource. But it’s not enough and it’s not meant to be. The devil wants you to want more! He wants you to think you can be young forever and never have to work and have perfect relationships and never die.
LIFE IS A STRUGGLE. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. We cannot change the fact that this world was corrupted by sin and it is deteriorating.
So stop expecting things to get better and just be happy when things are not as bad as they can be. Because always waiting for things to get better will make you miserable and you will waste your whole life when you could be happy despite your current circumstance. That is possible when your faith is in the Lord, not this world or things or money or relationships or the future or success or your looks.
Humanism is actually a scam perpetuated by consumerism. Humanism tells you that if you just DO THIS, you will soon be happy! It keeps you buying and being hungry for more even when you should be thankful and satisfied. That sounds very familiar? Apple, anyone?

The Bible teaches us to be thankful in all circumstances, to trust the Lord. Stop expecting things to ‘get better’ and start counting your blessings. Because THINGS COULD BE WORSE and they might be tomorrow. Obviously the older you get the more you see that the vacation was never going to happen. Life has a way of happening. Your spouse might die right when you thought you were finally going to travel. Or your child might not turn out the way you wanted. Or you might lose all your investments. Or, or, or…. You can either be bitter or accept it and make the most of the time by loving other people.
Just some thoughts on this sunny day after three days of rain and flooding. Take care friends!
Great post, my friend. One believes in the ultimate goodness of man, we believe in the ultimate goodness of God.
Great way to put it!
“Humanism is actually a scam perpetuated by consumerism.”
Ahh, now there’s an interesting point! I keep saying that a big part of what drives our addiction crisis in my neck of the woods is all the pity. We actually say to people, “well of course you use drugs, you’re on the street and all your family has abandoned you.” Yeah but, all your family has abandoned you and you now live on the streets, because you use drugs. We constantly promote self pity, resentment, and envy and those things are incredibly damaging to our mental health. It’s an especially bad in the case of addiction because people are constantly looking for justification for why they abuse drugs and alcohol.
As for consumerism, Seattle just released some numbers on what they’ve spent “helping the homeless” and it came out to something like 141,360 per person. That money never really trickles down. I actually call this kind of thing the, “homeless industrial complex,” because a lot of people are actually profiting off of the problem. If you solve the problem, those millions will no longer be available.
Good post! Very thought provoking. 🙂
Wow! Where did that money go?! Good comments!
The pessimist says the glass is half empty; the optimist says the glass is half full; the Christ-followers thank God for the water.🙂

There is some merit in self-improvement and leaving toxic situations, but those too can be mirages and idols, humanistic pursuits that leave God out.
Great perspective! Embracing gratitude in life’s ups and downs can bring genuine joy. Thanks for sharing this insightful reflection.
