Creative Cats?

I think many of us writers are like moody cats. We can purr and scratch at the same time. We might be chasing mice and climbing trees one day and sleeping for 18 hours another. Don’t try to pet us unless we want to be petted! And do not even try to put us in a cage or on a leash. We bite!

I have always had two distinct moods, depending on the moon cycle. In one , I write a lot, scrub the shower, take longer walks, and cook good meals. In the other, I am less motivated, more irritable, bored with everything, and watch too many movies. I see the same moodiness in other blogs.

Is this just the nature of the creative mind? I don’t feel like I need to ‘correct’ this part of my personality. I like that slightly manic phase which I call ‘having a hormone’. It’s when I do my best work.

But sometimes it’s hard to create when I’m in the blah phase. My brain just doesn’t come up with ideas as fast or when it does, I worry that they aren’t good. In the other stage I tend to publish too quickly without making sure it’s actually something anyone cares about.

I was listening to a podcast this morning, and I’m in my less energetic phase of the moon, which means I tend to observe more and talk less. I noticed that the host of this podcast was talking NON-STOP with barely a breath. She was so passionate about the topic. The problem is that there was another person there with her and they couldn’t get a word in edgewise. I mean I get it, false doctrine is a topic to be concerned about.

I started thinking, this host might be a bit manic today, or maybe she had too much caffeine, or maybe she is just that passionate about the dangers of this false teacher. She’s very popular and quite successful, so it doesn’t seem to be hurting her. But I did notice, as a fellow passionate person.

It made me think about other creatives that I follow and how single-minded they can be about a topic. They, and I, can tend to beat a dead horse sometimes. For example, the topic of Covid vaccines is still being obsessively talked about by many people. We all know they did not work as promised and the vaccine policies and the vaccines themselves hurt many people and, yet, we can’t help the ones who were hurt or died and the people in charge will never be held accountable. It’s a dead horse. I’m not very optimistic about holding back evil when I’m in this phase. But don’t worry, I’ll bounce back soon.

How about you? Do you think creatives are more likely to be a bit moody, maybe tend towards the symptoms of bipolar, OCD, or depression? Is your writing affected by your moods?

  1. I think creative people are more introspective. I think introspective people can over think things. I think people who overthink can get caught up
