Vacation Bible School has been lots of fun this week. Tomorrow is the last day. I’ve really enjoyed teaching the children truths about Jesus. They learned from stories about Peter that Jesus is holy, forgiving, trustworthy, and worth following. Tomorrow they will learn that Jesus is for everyone and how to share the good news with others.
Every day I’ve been challenged to teach these important concepts at a level that they could understand. It has helped me to understand the concepts better myself. It has also been a week of much prayer and reflection on my own faith.
I’m always amazed by the things little children understand and their insightful questions. My group are 7 and 8 year olds and they are very smart! Today one of them used the word bioluminescence! They do a science activity and these kids an answer a lot of science questions. And they just finished first grade!
They go to craft time before science and when we’re done I collect all their crafts and then hand them out when they go home. I was thinking today how if they had their crafts in their hands during the science lesson that they would probably have trouble paying attention to the teacher. This is why we don’t let them hold their crafts . They just don’t have the self-discipline to leave their fun stuff alone and listen.
This made me think about how sometimes God takes away the things that keep us from paying attention to Him. He might take away a relationship or a hobby or job or our health or our peace of mind so that we turn and look at Him. He wants our attention and when we lose focus, He will try to draw us back . But sometimes we don’t realize that he’s doing that and we resist. We try to get back what God took. Then our situation might get worse because we still aren’t paying attention.
But God is patient and He will wait until we look at Him for instructions and then things will start to change for the better.
