If their idea turns out to be safe, millions of lives could be saved. But we do not know the long term consequences of introducing genetic engineering into humans. One thing that jumps out at me is that if they can actually cure diseases, it will create many ripples ,people will have longer lives, fewer healthcare treatments will be needed, fewer Rx drugs needed if it works, a hit to existing drug companies and doctors who treat chronic conditions. I imagine that has not been overlooked by the people currently raking in billions in treating chronic disease symptoms. Or by the people who claim that the world is headed for a population explosion.

Update: as of 5/3/2021 there have been 3,544 post-vaccine deaths reported to the Vaccine Adverse Effects Reporting System, including three teenagers. And over 118,000 adverse events.

Our daughter was born with a very serious genetic mutation that had to be addressed through several potentially life-threatening surgeries when she was in the NICU. I understand the push to test the limits of genetic engineering on a personal level, because that was one of the worst years of my life. And we were blessed with an awesome surgeon, but it does not escape me that it does not go quite so well for everyone. The idea of this stuff being “cured” at the cellular level instead of at the end of a knife seems like a miracle.
But, oddly enough, I spent the past week reading about genetic engineering in detail (not covid-related) with her because she is obsessed with biology and got into the concept of cloning for a while. For our homeschool science lessons, we try to find current articles and videos on the topics we are studying. I had remembered from living in an equestrian area that cloning polo horses is a big thing now, so I went searching for videos on it, and fell down an internet rabbit hole. My general impression from it all was that the personalities behind the major breakthroughs and commercialization of genetic engineering are not all that worried about bioethics and the long-term consequences of their activities and they are moving at the speed of light.

If you have an industry that is sort of operating in the gray area of ethical standards to begin with, then add in emergency approval, I honestly just don’t know what to think. I’m not totally negative on it. “Trust” is not the word that comes to mind, however.
I think it’s fascinating. And a little scary. While on one hand it would be amazing to see diseases cured, it’s too soon and new to know how this will effect people.
Would be wonderful to cure autoimmune diseases! But what if it creates them?

These vaccines are amazing!
In the old days dentists made their money pulling teeth. Then in more recent years they made money filling cavities.
With improved dental hygiene, sealants and regular visits, dentists make their money cleaning teeth, the occasional filling or extraction.
I think most doctors would be happy not to see their patients die or have to cut them open or give them powerful drugs.
We have a shortage of healthcare professionals in the US and worldwide.
If we can cure common ailments this will allow the these people to do their job and perhaps give us more than 15 minutes for our annual physical.
It’s all good.
I can’t wait to get my shots and get back to my normal life.

Obviously I am not as trusting of science or the people who own the vaccine companies who have billionaires already due to the government backing the new vaccines, but I do appreciate scientific breakthroughs. Where would we be without microscopes, antibiotics, MRIs, and respirators?!
Every time a virus replicates in your body it is modifying your DNA. It’s been going on for millennia. Crisper and gene drive scare the hell out of me but a vaccine does not. I’ve been getting vaccines all my life.
So you are okay with the mRna vaccine? It’s not the same as the vaccines you’ve been getting all your life. I am still trying to decipher the difference between CRISPR and these vaccines. They do seem to be somewhat different.
Crisper is a technology. Mrna is genetic material. It’s my understanding that mrna serves a specific function similar to an enzyme. It does its job and becomes waste like other materials left after a metabolic function.
