Life in Cat Spring
Thinking of moving to beautiful Cat Spring? If you enjoy living in a community where people care about each other, have traditional values, respect each other’s property and privacy, support the local community, and enjoy Texas traditions such as farming, ranching, rodeo, trail rides, and country living, you’ll like it here!
My family discovered Cat Spring a little over 20 years ago when we were searching for a home in the country. I remember being awe-struct by the rolling hills and wide-open spaces. It seemed very far from civilization to this city-girl. But I am a country-girl now and I can’t imagine moving back to the big city.
We call Cat Spring a best-kept secret because, although it is not far from the Houston metroplex, not many people know that this hilly paradise exists. Cat Spring is growing, however, due to the recent exodus of people from Houston and other cities. If you are considering a move this page will be helpful.

If you are used to the hustle and bustle, night life, and quick access to shopping found in cities, you may not like country living. But if you enjoy sunsets, birdwatching, starry skies, and the space to grow a garden or ride horses, you’ll love it! You’ll be able to find groceries, hardware, restaurants, and other things you need in the nearby towns of Sealy, Bellville, New Ulm, and Industry, with Sealy being the largest town in Austin County.
Prospective residents should be aware that the Cat Spring area covers two counties, Austin and Colorado counties. And there are three different school districts for children in Cat Spring: Sealy, Bellville, and Columbus. Attendance boundaries are determined by the school districts. Cat Spring is not an incorporated town, which means that it is taxed and served by the applicable county government. This includes emergency services, law enforcement, roads, and regulations. There are no city services in Cat Spring, however, we do have our very own post office and zip code (78933)!

Cat Spring, Texas
Insider Tip: Although the video above has a sign that says Cat Springs, with an ‘S’ on the end, the correct spelling has no ‘S’.
Cat Spring, Texas is a rural area made up mostly of large cattle ranches and residential homes on acreage. The remnants of the original Cat Spring township borders the railroad tracks that are still in use. There you will find a tiny, but busy, post office and two antique stores. Don’t miss the Stardust Emporium Antique store at 10759 Newberg.

Going north on FM949, a mile or two away, there is a charming combination convenience store/diner/bar called the Cat Spring Country Club. A fried fish dinner is still served on Fridays at the Country Club which serves as a reminder that this area was originally settled by Czech Catholics who did not eat meat on Fridays.
Cat Spring is home to many families who arrived in Texas several generations ago. Currently the area is having a growth spurt due to the huge influx of people from other states discovering this beautiful hilly paradise located not far from Houston. Nearby towns include Sealy, Bellville, New Ulm, and Industry, with Sealy being the largest town in Austin County.
