Friday has been my usual shopping day for years. So today I went to town and I decided to stop at Bealls department store and see what was new. Then I went to Walmart to get my weekly groceries.
I’ve only been to Bealls a few times because I only recently learned they had such good deals. It’s a discount store similar to TJMaxx or Marshall’s. It used to be a regular store, more like JC Penney’s. They had closed this location for awhile then reopened it. It’s a small town and we don’t have many options. I sure miss the Payless Shoe Store and the Radio Shack that used to be in that shopping center.

Bealls recently changed their name back after they had tried calling it Burkes Outlet. I think they discovered that people didn’t like the name. Anyway, they have some very nice clothes at bargain prices, plus they cute home goods and decor. Today I took the time to browse all the home goods. I don’t really need anything, but if I did , I’d shop there. I ended up buying two fall weather shirts, or tops as some people call them. The cashier was very friendly and I even got $5 off my order with the rewards program and another $5 coupon for next time.
At Walmart I got my usual groceries, I’m pretty boring. But I also bought a cute soft blanket for Grace for $5. And I looked at the Fall decor and electronics just for fun. I have a ton of Fall decor that I need to put up this year . I usually forget until it’s almost time for Christmas decor. I also bought a pair of stretch Levi’s jeans . I’m ready for cold weather!
When it was time to check out I decided to use the regular check out this time. I usually use the self check. I also use Walmart curbside pickup and the free delivery service and free shipping.
I like having options. I like capitalism. It’s the best system going. Competition encourages innovation and good customer service and lower prices. Capitalism also provides jobs and benefits. But the best benefit of capitalism is how it supports freedom and independence.
That’s interesting. I’ve never looked at capitalism that way before, and now I have to agree.
Thanks , Dave
I enjoyed reading about choices, something many of us, including me, take for granted. Thank you,
👍👍
Oh, yes, good point! Something else about capitalism, it encourages ownership and dominion, much like home ownership does. We’ve just sold our hardware store and gotten a dollar store. So these businesses have gotten rid of some of the urban blight in the neighborhood. There are sidewalks now and people can gather to shop. They’ve put out flower pots. When you just have an empty lot, you have garbage everywhere, shiftless people roaming about.
Yes! That’s called broken window theory , the idea of disorder leading to crime . Congrats on the new store.
The basic difference between a constitutional republic and a Socialist state is who makes all the choices. In a constitutional republic, we minimize the roles of and the power of government so we can make our own choices. Because it minimizes the role of government, Capitalism is the obvious choice for a constitutional republic.
Capitalism, which really all about how individuals negotiate mutually agreeable transactions with each other, allows each of us to make our own choices. Socialism, on the other hand, gives the government the power to make all of our choices. Capitalism, because it decentralizes decision-making, facilitates prosperity. Socialism, because it centralizes decision-making results in bottlenecks and awful decisions in general. Socialism inevitably results in poverty.
