A Hurricane Barreled Through Southeast Texas

Hurricane Beryl left quite a path of destruction and power outages. I think she was mad because they kept referring to her as a “he” when Beryl is obviously a woman! 😆

We are fine now, but we did lose power for 7 hours on Monday. Thankfully we are equipped to keep my daughter’s ventilator and other devices running. Before it got hot I used a 300w battery pack that I bought after the great Texas freeze .

It works great!

The day before the storm hit my husband got the diesel generator ready to go just in case. He came home from work a little early Monday when the power was out to get it turned on and connected to the refrigerator .

Generators are a very sought after commodity in Houston and Galveston today .

After John turned on the generator I realized the internet would work again if we plugged it in , so then we were able to use our phones and watch TV again. I think the cellular towers were overloaded with so many people at home because of the storm. I couldn’t get any apps to work on my cell signal after the storm started. Our power went out about 10:00 after flickering several times.

By 1:00 the storm was mostly over and it was warming up in the house so we moved Grace into my office and plugged in the window unit air conditioner. My mom and sister came over to cool down because they had no power either . But around 6:00 the lights came back on and we all breathed a sigh of relief!

Trees are down everywhere from Beryl , including on my trail .

Houston had 2 million without power and many are still waiting for it to be restored. Lots of angry people blaming the power company for not doing better at preparing. We get our power from a rural electric cooperative and they worked hard to get back on.

Today the weather was beautiful , but hot . I’m very thankful for the nice cool air blowing out of my air conditioning vents!

That’s a freeway in Houston .
Kinda hard to tell but the roof of our barn got peeled back . The wind was blowing pretty hard.

I expect more storms and power outages this year. Next time we’ll try connecting the central air to the generator. Not sure about that. I wish we could afford to buy one of those whole house models . Our house is all electric , no gas. I think everyone should have a generator. The electric grid is old and unreliable and no one wants to pay to update it. Don’t wait for an emergency. Start preparing now . At the very least get a 300w battery pack and some small fans. Those 10000 mAh battery packs for phones are pretty good, too.

Stay cool !

  1. Good to hear you guys are all safe. Good word on having back up power supply ( I just googled 100w battery pack) hadn’t heard of them before. I do have a small back up generator but it’s still in the box. Makes things especially nerve racking when medical issues are in play. Take care. DM

  2. I’m pleased you are so well prepared and that things went relatively well! Grateful that only the barn roof sustained some damage.

We don’t usually have hurricanes up here, but we do get some pretty impressive windstorms.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
